Another successful Blood Donation Drive project last May 10, 2009 Sunday,and spearheaded by Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Singapore, this time, joining our humanitarian work are two Filipino alumni fraternities in Singapore which are AKHRO and Batangas Varsitarian.

Thus we can only prove and show that fraternal organization are meant to bond men and women for a common cause, and that is to serve humanity's purpose. Each organization contributed their life-saving blood unselfishly to save the lives of those who need it.

Again we would also like to give thanks to some of our friends, co-workers,relatives and family members who always supports us in this endeavor even during the past Blood Drive, for who are so many to mention.

We have another scheduled Blood Donation Drive on May 10, 2009 which fall on a Sunday and it will be a whole day activity.

This time other fraternal organization like Batangas Varsitarian and AKHRO Alumni Association Singapore is joining us for this worthy cause.

We will be posting articles, as well as pictures of the main event on May 10.

Please watch out for it.

By the way, we are extending our invitation to other individual or organization who also like to join us in this endeavor.

It was indeed another successfull Blood Donation Project for Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association Singapore last December 14,2008 which fall on a Sunday. The project started at 07:00 AM and the first one to donate was no other than our very own Alumni President Brod Ramon Dela Cruz. This time the Blood Donation activity is in celebration with our incoming 83rd APO International Founding anniversary (December 16, 2008), as always the Fraternal central guiding principle of 'Service' is our own way of delivering our clear message to our community. We at APO Alumni Singapore are very much thankful to our very own regular members, our Brothers and Sister, as well as our Friends, Colleague and Relatives and Family members who either took part and supported our noble project.

Again our commitment with Singapore Red Cross and Health Science Authority of Singapore to make this Blood Donation activity as part of our regular commited project, is a way that we are doing our part in our own little way to help out in their obejctive to have a regular Bloodbank supply specially for the most needy patient and thus to save Lives.

We really appreciate those who unselfishly devoted their time and commitment to this activity. Thus we hope that this will be a continuous relationship of Service and Commitment in Savings Lives.

As part of our advocacy of Service, we will again have another scheduled Blood Donation project scheduled on December 14, 2008 which falls on Sunday and as part of our yearly Fraternal anniversary celebration which is on December 16, 2008.

We have already coordinated this activity to Singapore Red Cross in which we just merely invite our friends, relatives and colleagues to proceed in going to HSA (Health Sciences Authority) at Outram Park near MRT.

SINGAPOREANS RESPOND ENTHUSIASTICALLY TO BLOOD DONATION CALL IN THE YEAR OF THE RAT

“This year’s response of an impressive 293 blood donors was unprecedented and is a new record during the third day of Chinese New Year; in the previous year approximately 100 donors came forward!” - Cecilia Tan, Director of the Blood Donor Recruitment Programme

On 9 February 2008, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and Singapore Red Cross (SRC) made an appeal to the public indicating that the Bloodbank was left with a reserve of four to five days. The public responded enthusiastically to the appeal and some even made a deliberate trip to Bloodbank to donate blood during the Chinese New Year holiday season.

As of yesterday morning, the total number of blood collected was 1445 bags, including Saturday’s collection of 217 bags of blood.

During the Chinese New Year period, the opening hours of the Bloodbank are as follows:

Chinese New Year’s eve - 9am to 1230pm
1st Day of Chinese New Year - Closed
2^nd Day of Chinese New Year - Closed
3^rd Day of Chinese New Year - 9am to 6pm

‘As the aging population of Singapore increases and there are cases of advanced critical illnesses, it is estimated that more people will require blood transfusion’ said Cecilia Tan.

In general, the composition of blood comprises of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

‘Currently, we are facing a shortfall of ‘A’ and ‘O’ blood supplies. The appeals via sms are usually due to blood shortages as the lifespan of red blood cells is 42 days, and the platelets can only be stored up till three to five days.’ - Cecilia Tan

The Response from International Organisations

Yesterday, a group of 42 members from Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association was invited by the HSA and SRC to come to the Bloodbank to donate blood.

‘This is our first time donating blood in Singapore, and we are proud of it as lives have been saved and furthermore, blood is a special gift from God and from one human to another” said Mr Ramon dela Cruz.

Mr Ramon mentioned that they will try to organise blood donation drive once or twice a year, depending on the level of blood supplies.

As of yesterday early morning, a lot of enthusiastic donors were heading to the Bloodbank to donate blood.

‘This is my first time donating blood, but it is will not be my last, I will continue donating blood whenever I can’ - said Lin Ju

‘Everyone should play their part in contributing to society, blood donation is one of them, and we should do it whenever we can and not wait till the last moment. We should always take precautions and provide for a rainy day’ - said Zhu Yin

APO Blood Project is a Success

It was a successful Blood Donation Campaign project for Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association (Singapore), and the feeling of Donating Blood to Save Lives is the very key factor that motivates our Brothers, Sisters, Friends and Colleagues to undertake such personal conviction to attend to this endeavor.

It was a fine moderate sunny Sunday day morning of February 10, 2008, in Singapore, wherein a total number of 37 Brothers and Sisters from APO and some 8 of our colleagues and friends came along to HSA (Health Science Authority) Singapore Building located at Outram Road, all from different directions. Only one thing in mind, and that is a full dedication to Donate Blood and to Save Lives.

We prepared for almost one (1) month for this project,properly coordinating with the Singapore Red Cross about the requirements for such project. However Singapore Red Cross was very appreciative and accommodating and they even gave us a Free Orientation regarding Blood Donation on our first Membership Meeting last January 2008, thus we find it very informative and educational on our part as most of the APO Brothers and Sisters who are present during the short one (1) hour orientation was enlightened about certain issues regarding blood donation.Thanks to Mr Perry Liu who is , a very humble person from SRC who is always being patience to answers all our inquiry.Also providing us a Bus for our Transpo after the said activity.

Alpha Phi Omega International Fraternity and Sorority is always been known worldwide as a Service oriented organization, thus we commit ourselves that we will still organize such Blood Donation Activity or if the need arises.

This could not happened if not for the APO Brothers and Sisters and our Colleague, Friends and Relatives who themselves sacrifice their Blood and Time, thus it is them that makes this project a success.

By the way APO (Singapore) had the privileged to be featured to a local Singapore Chinese Newspaper http://aposingbloodproject.blogspot.com/2008/02/apo-singapore-featured-on-chinese.html, many thanks to Ms. Stephanie of Singapore Press Holdings http://www.sph.com.sg who was there and gathering some certain events for their next newspaper write-up. But It was a privileged indeed to have some certain publicity, but though our noble project was part of our cardinal of Service to Others, we hope that this media publicity would further result on a positive outlook from their readers, that Donating Blood is one noble human act.

In celebration with the coming Heart's Month this February, Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association Singapore (APO AAS) is organizing a Blood Donation campaign in partnership with the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) and Red Cross of Singapore.We are inviting fellow Pinoys in Singapore to come and join with us in this HEART FULL efforts to "Give Life" through Blood Donation which is scheduled on the 10th of February 2008 Sunday at the Bloodbank, located in HSA Building, 11 Outram Road, near the MRT Outram Inter-Change Station (Green and Purple Line).

The blood donation process shall start at exactly 09:00am for the registration. All blood donors are required to bring passport and work permit and/or epass.

Salamat sa orientation kahapon, sobra kong na enlighten about Blood Donation, I fear no more! (tapang ko na! waaahh) and I have more motivation to be Blood Donor myself! I live en I give... sugod na sa FEB 10 SA HSA OUTRAM LANG YAN!

Para sa mga hindi naka attend, the HSA website (www.hsa.gov. sg) is very informative at nandito lahat ang diniscus khpon.

To summary:

1) Registration - DALIN ANG PASSPORT, WORK PERMIT OR EPASS CARD Your personal particulars will be recorded and you will be asked to fill in a health assessment questionnaire.
2) Medical screening - PEDE KA BA?! A doctor or nurse will ask you about your medical and social history to confirm that you are fit to make a donation, after which your weight, blood pressure, pulse and body temperature will be taken .
3) Blood test - UULITIN ULI KHIT KNOWING MO NA 'TO Your blood haemoglobin level will be checked to ensure that you can make a donation.
4) Blood donation - 300 TO 450 CC LANG DAW, MAY PAINKILLER PA! SOSYAL! HEHE Your arm will be cleaned, after which a local painkiller will be applied to ensure that you feel no pain during the donation.
5) Refreshments - KAPE MILO TUBIGGGG TO BE PROVIDED... After the donation, you will be required to rest briefly and have some light refreshments before resuming normal activities. It's that simple!
